S.P.A.C.E. Parent Therapy
Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions
What is SPACE?
SPACE stands for Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions. This is a parent-based treatment for caregivers of children and youth with anxiety, OCD, and related problems (separation anxiety, general anxiety, fears/phobias, panic disorder, and school refusal).
Developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz at Yale University, SPACE is an evidence-based and highly effective treatment that works by supporting caregivers of anxious children. Research shows it is as efficacious as one-on-one child-focused CBT treatment (https://www.spacetreatment.net/manual-and-books).
Why choose SPACE?
Through SPACE, parents and caregivers learn practical skills and strategies to support their children and youth in overcoming anxiety, OCD, and related challenges. The focus of treatment is on the adjustments parents make in their own responses—rather than trying to force change in their child or engage in constant battles.
The primary goals of SPACE:
Help parents respond to their child’s anxiety with greater support and confidence
Gradually reduce the accommodations they make for their child’s anxiety or OCD symptoms
This treatment can be provided individually as a family client (1 or 2 caregivers attending) and in a group setting.
